National Gallery in Bangkok
Art lovers will immensely enjoy the National Gallery in Bangkok. Containing both classical and contemporary by Thailand's most renowned artists, the gallery provides an excellent view into the art world that dominates this country. Situated opposite of the National Theatre on Chao Fa Road, the gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9-4. Admission is a very reasonable 10 Baht.
The building was originally used as the Royal Mint, which later became the Fine Arts Department, who developed it into the National Gallery. Inaugurated in 1977 by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the museum displays various works that illustrate centuries of Thailand's artwork. These include the King of Thailand's own oil paintings, as well as various temporary exhibits by up-and-coming artists both from Thailand and other countries. A permanent exhibition of modern work by Thai artists is on display as well.
This is also a great place to come if you are looking to buy quality Thai art, as the gallery occasionally hosts shows that have paintings up for sale.
