Mae Hong Son Thailand
Mae Hong Son is one of the most picturesque areas of Thailand. The most northwestern province of Thailand, it is quickly becoming a hotspot for travelers and explorers. The area didn't become popular or even known for that matter until the 1980's, when journalists reporting on the drug fights and military conflicts here began telling the public what a lovely spot it was. The unrest in this area is now over, and the spot has become a popular tourist haven, loved by many for its idyllic setting, unspoiled forests and elusive hill tribes.
The area is now extremely safe for travelers, and accommodation of all types is available throughout the province. The town of Mae Hong Son is the most popular place to stay, although as of late it has become quite developed in light of the sudden tourist boom. This is a great place to fine accommodation however, because day trips into the country are easily made form this jumping-off point.
Hiking is one of the most popular activities to partake in while visiting Mae Hong Son. The beautiful landscape has endless walking and trekking options, and range from easygoing trails to tough, rocky climbs. For a great view of town, climb to Wat Phra That Doi Kongmu, which is Mae Hong Son's most revered temple. Other trekking routes take hikers all over the province: the best thing to do is buy a detailed map once you arrive in town, plan your route, and set out for a great adventure! Guides can also be hired to take you through almost any route.
Nai Soi, the Karen Village of the long necked women, is an extremely popular tourist destination. These women are fitted with heavy brass neck rings at the age of five, and as a result their ribs and collarbone have compressed so much by the time they are adults that they have extremely long necks. The woman and men of this village/refugee camp are Burmese refugees, and while the woman are fascinating, it can be sad to see these people being treated as a tourist attraction.
Various ethnic hill tribes are scattered throughout Northern Thailand, and during your hiking treks you are likely to pass through some of their villages. These tribes of gentle people are extremely welcoming, but visiting just to gawk and snap pictures should not be done.
One of the most gorgeous places in Mae Hong Son is Soppong, full of serene jungle and trails. Tham Lod is a huge, prehistoric cave that can be explored with a hired guide. Visitors can also take a boat ride down the cave's river.
