Ko Samui Thailand
Ko Samui is Thailands second largest island, and the biggest exporter of coconuts in the country. This island is not only home to over 40 000 workers of the coconut industry, it is a hotspot for travelers of every type, from those looking for trendy clubs and nightlife to those seeking a getaway from the bustling energy of the rest of Thailand on tranquil beaches and lush forests.
The island has a road running all the way around, making it perfect for exploring. Villages are scattered around the coast, each with a distinct personality and each attracting different kinds of travelers. Hat Chaweng has the best beach on the island, but tends to be quite touristy. Hat Lamai is also a hotspot for tourists, although not as much so as Hat Chaweng. For a more quiet, remote setting head to Hat Mae Nam, Hat Choeng Mon or Hat Bo Phut. The island has many hotels and resort style accommodations, as well as beach huts, bungalows and dorm-style rooms.
The most popular activity to engage in on Ko Samui is, well...just doing nothing. The beaches are beautiful and clean, and provide a great place to relax with a good book, or nurse your hangover. Swimming is also lovely here, as the waters surrounding the island are crystal clear. If you want to get away from the sun, try a trip to the Samui Aquarium, where many of the area's local fish and sharks can be seen, as well as tigers. The island boasts many waterfalls, mainly in the interior. If you are up for a hike, the Na Muang Waterfalls are the most beautiful on the island, and by hiking here visitors will also be able to see much of the islands mountain range. The Samui Butterfly Garden is also a popular attraction, with over 24 different species of Thai Butterflies.
For the best nightlife in Ko Samui, head to Hat Chaweng. This small area contains bars for both the young who want to dance all night, to the older and sophisticated who want to relax with a good drink and mellow tunes.
